DescriptionInfant's shirt of white cotton. It is made from a long, narrow rectangle of cloth, with the short ends folded to the center back. The folded sides are slit for 4 1/2 inches from the top in order to set in the sleeve, which is cut in a V-shape, folded in half, and seamed at the top. This shape creates a gusset effect under the arm. The shoulder seam is inserted with a strip of whitework embroidery. The sleeve opening is edged with a self-fabric whipped ruffle, trimmed with bobbin lace. The top edge of the shirt is slit for 2 1/2 inches in from the folded edge, creating flaps that fold down over the belly band. The flaps are rounded and the bottoms of the slits are reinforced with buttonhole stitches worked over a thread.
