DescriptionSmall-mouthed, cylindrical, buff-colored stoneware preserve jar. The jar has nearly vertical sides that narrow to form a neck and thick rim. A dark brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, covers the interior and exterior of the jar, with the exception of the foot, which is unglazed. Three fingerprints are visible around the foot of the jar, as is a patch of dark brown glaze with a wrinkled appearance (see Notes). Minor imperfections in the glaze are visible around the exterior of the jar; in one spot, the glaze has flaked or chipped away where a small area of the stoneware has been gouged out.
Object number1979.68.718
NotesTechnique Note: The imperfections in the glaze evidence how the jar was glazed and underfired. After being formed, the jar was dipped into the brown slip glaze by holding onto its foot with one hand. The thumb, index, middle, and ring finger imprints are still visible around the foot of the jar. Then the jar was fired in a kiln, although incompletely. The wrinkly, black area of glaze near the foot of the jar indicates an underfired jar. Perhaps this area was facing away from the heat source. (Hunt 12/15/2004)
