DescriptionAn officer in a military uniform lies on the ground, supported by another soldier who kneels behind him. He holds a sword in his right hand and two pistols in his left hand. Another man takes the pistols from him. Three others stand nearby looking on. One holds his rifle over his shoulder. Another holds a flag. The third stands at the far right, holding his rifle with its fixed bayonet in front of him. A knapsack is on his back. Another man, at the left, fires his gun towards a distant group of soldiers engaged in combat. Except for the dying man, all of the other soldiers wear tall plumed hats. The smoke of battle fills the background.
