DescriptionHand-to-hand combat between mounted Mexican troops and American infantry is taking place on the left. One Mexican holds a sword, another fires a pistol. American soldiers have muskets or rifles with fixed bayonets. Dead and wounded men and a horse lie on the ground. Additional men in American military uniforms advance from the right foreground with a large American flag. Cannon balls are on the ground. Officers on horseback in the right background include General Winfield Scott. A cannon crew behind General Scott is firing towards the walled city in the background, which is partially hidden by cannon smoke. A Mexican flag flies from the battlements. Domes and towers are visible in the distance.
