DescriptionIn the right foreground, an officer on horseback directs ranks of infantrymen who advance towards the left. The officer wears a military uniform and a cocked hat and holds a sword in his right hand. An American flag is directly behind him. Other mounted troops are at the far left. Dead and wounded men and a horse lie on the ground. A cannon and its crew are at the far left with a pile of cannonballs nearby. In the upper left, beyond a band of cannon smoke, a separate vignette shows a group of officers. Most of them are on horseback. One man stands beside a fallen horse. Another adjusts the saddle of his mount. Ranks of men in the background advance towards the right. Three flags are dimly visible through the smoke. Trees, possibly palm trees, are at the far left.
