DescriptionA officer on horseback is in the center foreground. He wears a military uniform and holds a sword or saber. Three men at the left fire rifles with fixed bayonets at a fourth man firing a pistol from behind a fallen horse. Two men at the right fire towards the right. Other men lie or sit on the ground, apparently dead or wounded. A shattered cannon is at the far right. In the background, ranks of soldiers, partially obscurred by cannon smoke, run towards the left. American flags fly above the troops at the right; a Confederate flag flies above the troops at the left.
