DescriptionA man wearing a cocked hat and an overcoat over a vest, breeches, and riding boots, sits astride a white horse with an elaborate saddle and saddle blanket trimmed with tassels. He holds a sword in his right hand. A large flag with the initial "N" surrounded by laurel leaves is on a staff surmounted by a gilt eagle. Men in military uniforms are at the left and right. Some are dead or wounded. A soldier at the far right fires a pistol towards the right. A man, apparently an enemy soldier, rushes in from the right with his arms raised. A large number of bayonets are visible through the smoke in the background.
