Most Rev. Joseph F. Donnelly

American, 1909 - 1977
BiographyBishop Joseph F. Donnelly was born on 1909 May 1 in Norwich, Connecticut. He grew up in New Haven, studied for the priesthood at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, and received a master of arts degree from St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore in 1931. He was ordained in 1934 in the Cathedral of St. Joseph. He was pastor at St. John the Baptist Church in New Haven from 1958-1968.

He also had a career as a labor mediator. He founded the Waterbury Catholic Labor Council, which later grew into the Diocesan Labor Institute. In 1944, he was named to the Connecticut Board of Mediation and Arbitration and served on the board for almost two decades.

He died on 30 June 1977 in New Haven.
