BiographyJanet Bond Arterton was born on February 8, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. At the age of 21, while still a student, she was elected Coroner of Mercer County, New Jersey.
Judge Arterton earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Mount Holyoke College in 1966 and her Juris Doctor from Northeastern University School of Law in 1977. Following law school, she served as a law clerk for Judge Herbert Jay Stern in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey from 1977 to 1978.
From 1978 to 1995, she was in private practice in New Haven, Connecticut, focusing on employment and labor law with the firm formerly known as Garrison & Arterton, P.C. On January 23, 1995, President Bill Clinton nominated her to serve as a United States District Judge for the District of Connecticut. She was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 24, 1995, and received her commission the same day, assuming her role on May 15, 1995. During her tenure, she presided over thousands of cases, including high-profile corruption trials and the significant Ricci v. DeStefano affirmative action lawsuit. Judge Arterton assumed senior status on July 1, 2014, and inactive senior status on October 15, 2023.
She has been recognized with numerous awards for her contributions to justice and the legal profession, including an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Northeastern University in 2005. She also established the New Haven District Court's Support Court program to assist federal defendants with addiction issues.
