BiographyJanet C. Hall was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on September 15, 1948. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Holyoke College in 1970 and her Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law in 1973, where she was a Root-Tilden Scholar. In 2007, she received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Quinnipiac University.
Her legal career began in private practice from 1973 to 1975. She then served as a trial attorney in the United States Department of Justice Antitrust Division from 1975 to 1979, with a period in 1979 as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia. From 1980 until her judicial appointment in 1997, Judge Hall was in private practice in Hartford, Connecticut, becoming a partner at Robinson & Cole in 1982, focusing on civil litigation. President Bill Clinton nominated her to the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut on June 5, 1997. She was confirmed by the Senate on September 11, 1997, and received her commission on September 18, 1997. Judge Hall served as Chief Judge for the District of Connecticut from September 2013 to August 2018. She assumed senior status on January 21, 2021.
