Peter T. Zarella

BiographyPeter T. Zarella is a former Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court. He was born on October 13, 1949, in Massachusetts.

He attended Northeastern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering in 1972. Zarella then earned his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School in 1975.

His legal career began in private practice in 1977. From 1978 to 1996, he was a partner at the Hartford firm of Brown, Paindiris & Zarella. In 1996, Zarella was appointed as a judge to the Connecticut Superior Court. He was elevated to the Connecticut Appellate Court in 2000 and then nominated by Governor John G. Rowland to the Connecticut Supreme Court in 2001.

Zarella served on the state's highest court until his retirement on December 31, 2016. He authored over 300 majority opinions during his tenure. Following his retirement, he joined the law firm McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, LLP.
