BiographyLee S. McKeithen (1913-2010) practiced law in North Carolina and Connecticut until she was 90. A 1935 graduate of Duke Law School, she was among its first female graduates and was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1934. She began her career at R.L. Smith & Sons in Albemarle, North Carolina, and became vice president of the North Carolina Bar Association in 1938.
After moving to New York City, she became the first woman admitted to the bar on motion in the First Judicial Department of New York State. She later moved to Old Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1950, where she dedicated herself to family and community for nearly two decades, serving in various civic roles.
In 1968, McKeithen resumed her legal career at Cummings & Lockwood in Greenwich, Connecticut. She passed the Connecticut Bar in 1973 and in 1980, became the firm's first female partner. She continued to practice until age 90, then retired to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she passed away in 2010 at 97.
