BiographyBarbara A. Coppeto was born on September 26, 1933, in Waterbury, Connecticut, and was the daughter of attorney Ralph Coppeto.
She attended Trinity College in Washington D.C., graduating in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and history. Following in her father's footsteps, she pursued law at the University of Virginia Law School, graduating class of 1958.
After being admitted to the Connecticut State Bar in September 1958, Coppeto began her legal career as an attorney at Yudkin, Yudkin and Coppeto in Derby, Connecticut. She practiced there until 1981, handling a diverse range of cases, including trusts and estates, personal injury, and criminal law in various local and superior courts.
In 1981, Barbara A. Coppeto was appointed a Judge of the Superior Court in the State of Connecticut. She served until 2001 and also functioned as a Family Court Judge in several cities across Connecticut. In 2001, she was appointed Senior Judge, a role she held until her retirement in 2015.
She was a member of the National Association for Women Judges, the New Haven County Courthouse Restoration Task Force, and a past Treasurer for the Connecticut Judges Association. She passed away on January 5, 2017, at the age of 83, after a battle with cancer.
