DescriptionWoman's chemise of fine, plain linen. The front and back panels are cut separately and are joined by shoulder straps; each panel is gathered into a narrow band between the shoulder straps. The neckline is wide and square (4 3/4 inches deep x 11 1/2 inches wide). A flap of matching linen was added to the front neckline to fold over the corset and prevent it from chafing. The sleeves are short (6 1/2 inches) and are gathered into the shoulder strap and into a narrow band at the sleeve opening. Underarm gussets provide ease. The lower armhole is reinforced with a band of extra fabric. Triangular inserts in the side seams provide extra width in the lower part of the chemise. Seams are sewn selvage-to-selvage or are flat-felled. The hem is turned under 1/4 inch.
