DescriptionWoman's chemise of fine, plain linen. The front and back panels are cut separately and are joined by shoulder straps; each panel is gathered into a narrow band between the shoulder straps. The neckline is wide and square (five inches deep x 11 1/2 inches wide). A flap of matching linen is sewn to the front neckline to fold over the corset and prevent chafing. Triangular flaps at the shoulder fold over the corset straps and button at the top of the sleeves. The sleeves are short (6 5/8 inches) and are gathered into the shoulder strap and into a narrow band at the sleeve opening. Underarm gussets provide ease. The lower armhole is reinforced with a band of extra fabric. Triangular inserts in the side seams provide extra width in the lower part of the chemise. Seams are sewn selvage-to-selvage or are flat-felled. The hem is turned under 1/4 inch.
