BiographyRobert Palmer Anderson was born on 27 March 1906 in Noank, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale College in 1927 and Yale Law School in 1929 before entering private law practice. He served as a New London County public defender for 11 years during the 1930s. During World War II, he was part of the Coast Guard Reserve, before being transferred to the Navy's 11th Amphibious Force and became the operations officer for the commander of landing craft in the Normandy invasion. In 1946, he was elected to the Connecticut Senate from the 18th District and was appointed New London County state's attorney in 1947. In 1953, Anderson became a state superior court judge, then in 1954, was appointed to the U.S. District Court for Connecticut by President Eisenhower. In 1960, he became the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for Connecticut. In 1964, President Johnson appointed Anderson to the U.S. Court of Appeals. He supervised the reorganized of the bankrupt New Haven Railroad. He died on 2 May 1978.
