BiographyConstance Belton Green (b. 1947) is an American lawyer notable for being the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Connecticut School of Law, achieving this in 1972.
Born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, Green attended segregated public schools. She earned her undergraduate degree from the Hampton Institute and also took exchange classes at Cornell University, initially majoring in early childhood education. Her career path shifted towards law after meeting recruiters from the UConn School of Law.
After graduating from law school, Green began her legal career as a staff attorney at the New Haven Legal Assistance Program and Greater Hartford Legal Aid. She later transitioned to roles in education, serving as an assistant professor at Manchester Community College, where she coordinated their legal assistant education program. Green also held positions in public service, including an elected member and vice chair of the Bloomfield Board of Education in the 1980s, before working for the Connecticut State Department of Education as an education consultant and liaison to federal agencies. As of 2004, she was the director of equity and diversity at Eastern Connecticut State University.
In 2019, Green authored "Still We Rise: African Americans at the University of Connecticut School of Law," a book documenting the history of Black students and faculty at the institution. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Connecticut Law School Alumni Association. The Constance Belton Green Diversity Fund was established in 2020 to support diversity and social justice initiatives at the UConn School of Law.
