Brenda A. Eckert earned her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in 1967 and her J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1973. She was admitted to the U.S. District Court, District of Connecticut in 1974, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1975.

She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and its Connecticut chapter, having been a member of AILA since 1987. She served as a former President and Trustee of the University of Connecticut Law School Foundation and as President of the Board of Directors for Whiting Estates Association, Inc. She was also a former Trustee of Hartford College for Women.

Eckert is an "Of Counsel" attorney at Shipman & Goodwin LLP, where she is a long-standing member of the Employment and Labor Practice Group. She also previously served as the chair of the firm's Immigration Law practice for several years. Her legal practice focuses on civil litigation, civil rights, employment law, and employment-based immigration law, representing both public and private sector employers in state and federal courts and administrative agencies. She has experience defending clients against claims including contract disputes, discrimination, and related state tort claims.
