DescriptionOvoid, wide-mouthed jar with a brown lead glaze and patches of manganese black decoration. The lead glaze coats the interior and exterior sides of the jar, although the bottom of the jar and exterior of the foot are not glazed. The jar rests on a flat foot and has swelled sides that swell, then narrow, to form a wide, plain rim. There are five bands of raised lines circling the jar at the rim, and three incised lines circling the jar about an inch below this. Two pulled lug handles are pressed against the jar along their full length. The handles attached completely to the jar between the two groups of lines just described. Five patches of manganese black decoration have been applied around the neck and shoulder of the jar. There are many scratches in the glaze at the widest points of the jar, and there is mild crazing over the glazed surfaces. A crack through part of the wall of the jar is visible inside the jar at one of the handles.
