DescriptionWoman's petticoat of white cotton. The petticoat is closely gathered all around the one-inch-wide self-fabric waistband. It is decorated with four bands of inserted tape, folded back and forth in a zig-zag like rickrack. The bottom of the petticoat is hand-stitched with white eyelet embroidery; the design is of a leafy wreath surrounding a grape and floral spray within each scallop along the edge. The center back opening extends 9 1/2 inches; there is currently no means of closure. A carefully stitched tuck has been taken across the front of the petticoat, 4 1/2 inches down from the waistband. This was probably done by the original owner in the 1860s, when the silhouette changed so that the skirt was longer in the back.
