DescriptionWoman's petticoat of white cotton. The petticoat is gathered lightly across the front and closely across the back into the one-inch-wide waistband. The lower 6 1/2 inches of the petticoat is embellished with a row of machine-made lace insertion flanked by bands of ruched self-fabric; a 1 3/4-inch-wide scalloped band of the lace is stitched around the bottom edge. The center back opening extends about 13 1/2 inches, but the seam has been opened further. The petticoat has been pieced around the sides and back near the waistband; the waistband has been extended on each side of the opening, and it has been folded in on itself to make it narrower, so that the original owner's mark is now inside the waistband.
Object number1966.144.0
MarkingsHand-written in black ink on the proper left side of the petticoat waistband in the back (now folded inside the waistband): "Esther A. Burlingame."
