DescriptionRanks of men in Union army uniforms, consisting of long coats with capes and beaked caps, charge from the left. Most hold rifles with fixed bayonets. One man holds an American flag and a drawn sword. One man is on horseback. Some men in the foreground have knapsacks and canteens. Confederate troops are in retreat in the right background. Some fall dead or wounded on a small rise, probably earthworks. A cannon and the wheels of another cannon are visible at the right. Additional troops, supply wagons, leafless trees, and mountains are in the distance.
