DescriptionUnion soldiers wearing uniforms and carrying rifles with fixed bayonets charge up a steep hill or earthworks. One man holds a sword. An explosion at the left sends fire, smoke, and debris into the air. Some men fall dead or wounded. A Confederate flag flies to the right of the explosion. An American flag is carried by the troops at the far right.

JULY 4TH 1863. / Blowing up a Rebel fort and heroic charge of Union Volunteers through the breach, June 26th 1863, The enemy being hard pressed on every side by our Army / and Navy and finding further resistance hopeless, surrendered on the 'Glorious 4th of July' to General Ulysses S. Grant after a siege of 65 days. Over 30,000 prison-/ ers and a vast amount of Arms and munitions of war fell into our hands."
