DescriptionUnion soldiers in uniform stand and kneel behind a log and earth fortification housing a cannon battery. Three cannon crews are in the process of firing their guns. One man is clearing a rifle with a ramrod. Two tents are in the right foreground. A man lies in each tent, apparently asleep. Other men stand and sit nearby. One smokes a pipe. A drum is beside one of the tents with stacked rifles and a knapsack nearby. At the right, four men sit around a campfire on which a pot is steaming. An American flag flies from the rampart. A Confederate flag flies from earthworks in the background. Puffs of smoke, tree stumps, and an exploding shell are in the field between the lines. The city of Vicksburg is in the left background. Two ships are on the Mississippi River in the right background. A large tree is at the left.
