DescriptionA scene in the Union cannon battery. Three men in uniform are loading a cannon at the far left. A crew to their right has just fired another gun. A row of men at the right fire their rifles over the low earth wall. Additional men with rifles with fixed bayonets and an officer on horseback advance from the rear. Cannon balls, a powder horn, a canteen, a rifle, a bedroll, a sword, a horse, and dead and wounded men lie on the ground. Some men tend the wounded. One man carries a bucket of water. An American flag flies at the right. Another line of fortifications with cannons and huge numbers of men are visible in the distance through the smoke of battle. A flag flies on a distant hilltop at the left.
