DescriptionUnion troops bearing American flags charge earthworks in the background. A shell explodes in the center foreground. Some men fall dead or wounded. Behind the explosion, soldiers are tearing down a picket fence. Some hold axes. Most soldiers hold rifles with fixed bayonets or swords. In the left background, men run along what appears to be a narrow bridge leading into the fort. An American flag flies nearby. Cannon protrude from the top of the earthworks, and men fire down at the attackers. The sky is full of smoke. In the left background are four ships at sea.
