DescriptionA young man wearing a Zouave uniform consisting of a fez with a tassel, a short jacket, a shirt, pantaloons, spats and low shoes. A pistol is tucked in a sash at his waist. He holds an American flag with thirty-four stars in his left hand and a cutlass in his right hand. A cannon on its carriage is in the left background, between what appear to be two large rocks. A shell explodes in the right background near three barrels and some boards.

InscribedOn recto, lithographed title beneath image: "FLAG OF THE FREE. / Forever float that standard sheet! / Where breaths [sic] the foe but falls before us? / with Freedom's soil beneath our feet, / And Freedom's banner streaming o'er us!"; in rectangle, at bottom center of image: "YOUNG ZOUAVE."

On verso, in pencil, a drawing, probably a tracing of the image from the recto, occupies the major portion of the sheet; upper left, in pencil: "A.C.
