DescriptionWoman's white cotton chemise with wide, square neckline formed by an eyelet-embroidered yoke. The yoke is pointed at the center front opening, which fastens with three small mother of pearl buttons, carved to resemble flowers. The short (approximately three-inch) sleeves are eyelet-embroidered along the top of the arm and around the opening. Three buttons like those used at center front connect the embroidered edges along the top of the arm. The front and back panels of the chemise are gathered into the yoke. The front is pieced for the length of the left side, and the back is pieced for the length of the right side. The hem has been turned up about one inch and machine stitched (a later alteration.) All other seams are hand-stitched. The sleeve is cut full under the arm so that a gusset is not required.
