She is wearing a dress with bell or pagoda sleeves, with an undersleeve engageante beneath them. She is wearing gloves, a lace collar fastened with a brooch, and a long necklace. She is holding a book open with her left hand.

Marcia Bancroft's mother was named Mercy Marcia Lovering Bancroft. Of the two of them, the daughter is the more likely subject, as the person depicted is younger and Marcia's life dates put her at being in her 40s when daguerreotypes were most popular.
