DescriptionSixth plate daguerreotype of a woman and man in the Bancroft family, possibly Lydia Bancroft and her brother, James Bancroft, Jr.. They appear to be in their 20s or 30s. The woman is wearing her hair parted in the middle and fashioned into side wings over her ears. Her dress is pleated in the front and her white collar is quite wide, lying flat on her shoulders. The man next to her has long hair worn to about mid-ear and parted on the side. He may have facial hair worn in the chin curtain style. He is wearing a jacket with wide lapels, a waistcoat, a white shirt, and a white collar with the rounded ends turned down over what appears to be a cravat.

InscribedHandwritten on envelope (not original): "2 in case / Bancroft Family / Possibly Maria L, daughter and / James Jr."NotesSubject note: The inscription on the envelope suggests that the people in this daguerreotype are a daughter of Mercy Lovering Bancroft, and James Bancroft, Jr. Based on the life dates of the Bancroft daughters and the tentative date range of the daguerreotype, it's possible that the woman is Lydia M. Bancroft (1813-1890). James Bancroft, Jr., born in 1806, would have been in his 40s at the time that this daguerreotype was probably made. Those dates, ages, and identifications are plausible but far from definite. On View
