DescriptionAn elderly man lies dead or dying in what appears to be a sleigh bed. His eyes are closed and he wears a long-sleeved nightshirt. His head rests on a pillow and blanket or coverlet is pulled up to his chest. Six men stand around his bed. One is dressed as a minister in robes with a clerical collar. His hands are clasped as if in prayer. The other men wear coats, trousers, vests and neckties. One man has a beard. The man in the left foreground rests his hand on the back of a chair. A table covered with a tablecloth is at the right. A patterned carpet is on the floor. Drapery falls over the head of the bed in the right background.
