DescriptionAn elderly man lies in bed, propped up on a large pillow. He wears a nightshirt and is covered with a sheet or blanket. His eyes are closed, and he appears to be dead or dying. Three men, two women, and a young boy stand around the bed. The men wear coats, pants, vests, shirts, and neckties. The women wear black dresses. The woman in the foreground wears a fringed shawl and a bonnet. She holds a handkerchief to her face and appears to be weeping. The boy stands beside her. Two tiers of fringed drapery with a valance frames the scene at the left, right, and above. Patterned carpet is on the floor. The corner of a painting in a gilt frame is visible on the wall in the background.
