DescriptionEleven men and two women stand around a bed in which an elderly man lies dead or dying. His head rests on a pillow, and a sheet or blanket is drawn up to his neck. The top of a nightshirt is just visible above the coverlet. The men wears coats and pants. Some have sideburns. One of the women who wears a cap and holds a handkerchief to her face appears to be weeping. One of the men rests his right hand on the back of a rocking chair and covers his face with a handkerchief and appears to be weeping as well. A third woman is going out a door in the left background. A cord with a tassel, probably a bell pull, hangs beside the door. A small table is on the right of the door. A fireplace with a marble mantle and sides, a brass fender, and andirons is at the left. A candelabra with three candles is on the mantle. A mirror hangs above it. A second mirror, a shaving mirror, is on a chest of drawers at the far right. A bookcase containing books is in the right foreground. A patterned carpet is on the floor.
