DescriptionA bearded man lies in a plain wooden bed with turned bed posts. His eyes are closed, and he appears to be dead or dying. He wears a shirt with a high collar. His head rests on a pillow. He is covered with an elaborately woven coverlet. Eighteen men and boys are gathered around the bed, which is viewed from the foot and drastically foreshortened. The men wear coats, pants, shirts, and neckties. Some have beards or mustaches. One man wears eyeglasses. A man at the left holds a cane. A man at the right holds a handkerchief to his face and appears to be weeping. A man seated to the right of the bed holds a pocket watch in his left hand. Patterned wallpaper is on the wall. A patterned carpet is on the floor.
