DescriptionA young boy stands on an upholstered chair in the interior of a room. He wears a plaid dress, a petticoat, and pantalets trimmed with lace. An epaulet is on his left shoulder, and his left hand rests on the hilt of a blunt sword that has been thrust through his sash. His right hand rests on a rifle; the barrel of the gun leans on his right shoulder. A beaked military cap with a plume is on his head. At the left is a carved marble fireplace with a fringed border along the edge of the mantle. A small bouquet of flowers, including a rose or zinnia and leaves, is on the mantle. A mirror in a gilt frame hangs above. Drapery is tied back at the right.
