DescriptionMounted Mexican soldiers on the left gallop towards the right, where American soldiers are advancing up a steep slope. The Mexicans have long hair, beards and mustaches, and wear broad-brimmed straw hats. Some hold swords. A man at the far left holds a sword and a rosary in his upraised right hand. Below, Mexican infantry charge, holding rifles with fixed bayonets. Fire and smoke issue from a cannon in the left foreground. An American soldier runs directly into the blast. Another man, apparently dead, lies on the ground behind him. Also in the left foreground, a wounded horse lies on the ground near a man holding a rifle. A Mexican flag flies in the left background. An American flag is held by one of the Americans at the right. Unlike most of the Mexicans, the Americans wear military uniforms.
