DescriptionOrderly ranks of men in Union army uniforms advance towards retreating Confederate soldiers at the left. They all appear to bear rifles with fixed bayonets. Officers on horseback direct their troops. An American flag, a regimental flag, and a Confederate flag are all visible. Hand-to-hand combat is taking place in the foreground near a fallen horse and a shattered cannon. One Union soldier uses his rifle as a club. Dead and wounded men lie on the ground. In the background, partially hidden by smoke, additional soldiers, horses, and cannons occupy an extensive field between two clumps of trees.
