DescriptionUnion infantry, led by two officers on horseback, advance from the left. Most men hold rifles with fixed bayonets. Some men hold swords. One man holds an American flag. A shell bursts in the center foreground. Men and a horse fall, wounded or dead. At the far right, additional men in Union army uniforms fire from behind tree trunks. In the background, Union troops advance while Confederate troops retreat. A passenger train drawn by a locomotive and the buildings of a city are in the right background. A forest is in the left background, partially hidden by smoke.
