DescriptionUnion soldiers on a hilltop fire at ranks of Confederate forces on a plain below. Men at left and right fire rifles with fixed bayonets. A cannon crew fires its gun through a gap in the infantry. Two officers on horseback are at the left. Nearby, a soldier kneels on the ground beside a wounded comrade. Other dead and wounded men lie nearby. Cannon balls and a box of charges are near the cannon. Other soldiers charge from the right, accompanied by an officer on a spotted horse. Two of these soldiers wear Zouave uniforms. One man carries an American flag. The Rebel army is in the background, partially obscurred by cannon smoke.
