DescriptionA check in the amount of $11,000 drawn on the City Bank and Trust Company, and payable to the Town of Norfolk for is dated December 14th, 1916 and signed by "H. A. Allen, vice prest." It is endorsed on the back, "Town of Norfolk / Philemon W. Johnson" and stamped "PAID."
Object number1995.36.1442
NotesSubject Note: In January 1917, Philemon W. Johnson, treasurer of the town of Norfolk, Connecticut, disappeared, taking his rifle and leaving a suicide note. Numerous irregularities were discovered in the town accounts, including a check that had been altered from $2000 to $12000, the balance being deposited in a bank in nearby Canaan. It seems likely that this check relates to that case.On View
