DescriptionA check is payable to the City Bank and Trust Company in the amount of $20,000 is signed by three Selectmen of the Town of Norfolk, Augustus Curtiss, Oliver B. Gibbs, and J. A. Maloney. The reverse side of the check is shown above and has been endorsed by the Treasurer of the Town of Norfolk, Philemon W. Johnson. Below his signature, in a different hand, is the inscription, "$1000. Paid on the within note / Sept 11, 1916".

NotesSubject Note: In January 1917, Philemon W. Johnson, treasurer of the town of Norfolk, Connecticut, disappeared, taking his rifle and leaving a suicide note. Numerous irregularities were discovered in the town accounts, including a check that had been altered from $2000 to $12000, the balance being deposited in a bank in nearby Canaan. It seems likely that this check relates to that case.On View
