DescriptionA bank check drawn on City Bank and Trust Company of Hartford in the amount of $4,000 is dated October 4th, 1916. The check is signed by three Selectmen of the Town of Norfolk, Augustus Curtiss, Oliver B. Gibbs, and J. A. Maloney. The reverse side of the check is shown below and has been endorsed by the Treasurer of the Town of Norfolk, Philemon W. Johnson..
Object number1995.36.1440
NotesSubject Note: In January 1917, Philemon W. Johnson, treasurer of the town of Norfolk, Connecticut, disappeared, taking his rifle and leaving a suicide note. Numerous irregularities were discovered in the town accounts, including a check that had been altered from $2000 to $12000, the balance being deposited in a bank in nearby Canaan. It seems likely that this check relates to that case.On View
