He enlisted on August 1, 1862 and was mustered in to the Second Connecticut Volunteer Light Battery on September 10, 1862 as a Quarter Master-Sergeant. He was promoted to First Sergeant on February 14, 1863 and was promoted to Second Lieutenant on May 1, 1864. On January 31, 1865 he was promoted to First Lieutenant.
