DescriptionA scene from ancient history showing Alexander the Great holding the bridle of a rearing black horse. King Phillip, Alexander's father, looks on from the porch of a stone building with an Ionic colonnade. A statue of a warrior holding a spear and a shield is nearby. The king wears a gold crown on his head and is attended by his queen and a soldier with a plumed helmet. Other onlookers include a bearded man and a boy. A temple is on an acropolis in the background. Fortifications are near the base of the hill.

InscribedOn recto, lithographed title beneath image, "ALEXANDER SUBDUING THE FIERY WAR HORSE BUCEPHALUS. / We are told that Philip shed tears of joy upon this occasion, and embracing Alexander after He had alighted, said to him, My son seek a Kingdom more worthy for thee for Macedon / is below thy merit." Inscribed in pencil: lower center, "Credit marks 47"; lower right, apparently in the same hand, "Presented to Edson Harvey by his teacher / [Wilson A. Whiton?]".

On verso, inscribed in purple ink, upper left, "753". Inscribed in pencil: "Print / Box 6 / #17" and, at lower right, "Dwr. 2 / CONSV CPC 1987".
NotesInscription Note: Signature in inscription is illegible, but appears to begin "Whi". Wilson Whiton is listed as a teacher in the 1851 Hartford City Directory.
