BiographyThe Greater Hartford Twilight Baseball League, founded in 1929 by Harry N. Anderson, is one of the oldest summer leagues in the United States. It was previously known as the City Amateur League and the City Independent Twilight League in the 1910s and 1920s, and was reorganized in 1929 as the Hartford Twilight League. The baseball games were played at Colt Park, Pope Park, and Bulkeley Stadium.
One of the most well known franchises of the League was the Savitt Gems. Notable players from the League included Peter "Lefty" Naktenis (1914-2007) of the Mayflower Sales and Johnny “Schoolboy” Taylor (1916-1987), who played in the Negro National League.
