BiographyFrancis Joseph Spellman (1889-1967) was an American Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop of New York from 1939 until his death in 1967. From 1932-1939, Spellman served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston. He was created a cardinal by Pope Pius XII in 1946.
