DescriptionSixth plate daguerreotype of a woman in the Bancroft family, possibly Marcia Bancroft. She is wearing a dress with large pagoda sleeves, a white collar fastened with a brooch, and fingerless lace gloves.

InscribedHandwritten on envelope (not original): "2 in case / Bancroft Family / Possibly Maria L, daughter and / James Jr."NotesSubject note: While the inscription on the envelope suggests that the woman in this portrait is Mercy Lovering Bancroft, her life and death dates would put her in her 60s during the 1840s (presumably when this image was made), and the woman in the image doesn't look that old. Mrs. Bancroft and her husband had several daughters, and assuming that this daguerreotype was made in the 1840s, the one to be of the right age is the eldest, Marcia (1802-1874), but this is far from a definite identification.Subject Terms
