DescriptionSpun Britannia metal flagon, part of a Communion service consisting of a flagon (.1) and two chalices (.2-.3). The flagon has a stepped, conical lid with a hexagonal, pointed finial at the top. The lid is joined to the rim of the flagon with a hinge. The body of the flagon is cylindrical, over a wide flared base. A band of molding circles the body of the flagon just above the base. The band consists of a projecting curve with a fillet, or narrow flat section, above and below. At one side is an ear-shaped handle with a C-scroll at the bottom that extends into a flat, heart-shaped terminal. The handle has a ridged outer surface and a curved interior surface. It is soldered at the top and bottom to projecting oval disks on the side of the flagon. Opposite the handle, a short, lobed, curved spout is soldered to the rim and upper body of the flagon. The spout is applied over one large hole that is punched through the side of the flagon. The flagon is tarnished lightly on the exterior and has extensive tarnishing on the interior. The flagon has many light scratches and small dents.
