DescriptionGroup of three cast pewter pint mugs, part of a pewter Communion service consisting of a flagon (.1), three mugs (.2.1-.3), a baptismal basin (.3), and two patens (.4-.5). Each mug has a cylindrical body with straight, tapered sides. Each mug has a cast handle that is soldered onto the body; the S-curve handle has a small tab on top, filing marks on the inside, and a rounded terminal. Opposite the handle is an engraved inscription that reads, "LIEUT URIEL HOLMES'S/ Gift to/ HARTLAND CHURCH". Each mug has a two plain, raised bands: one at the rim and another one-third down the body. Each mug has tapered molding around the base. The underside of each mug has skimming marks. Mug .1 is well polished, while mugs .2 and .3 are tarnished. Each mug has light scratches. Mugs .2 and .3 each have dents on the body. Mug .3 has a bowed bottom.

Skimming Marks: Skimming marks are concentric rings left on cast pewter objects by skimming tools. Skimming is the process of removing metal and smoothing rough surfaces by scraping the pewter object as it rotates on a lathe.

MarkingsThe interior bottom of each mug has a circular mark of the initials "FB", with a small fleur-de-lis both above and below the initials.Inscribed"LIEUT URIEL HOLMES'S/ Gift to/ HARTLAND CHURCH" is engraved on the body of the mug opposite the handle. The underside of mug .1 has an inscription scratched into the surface of the pewter, "D N Gaines". The underside of mug .2 has an "X" scratched into the pewter. The underside of mug .3 has a "T" scratched into the pewter.
