DescriptionPressed colorless glass paperweight consisting of a rectangular glass block with curved edges and corners. The bottom surface of the paperweight is recessed; the edge of the recess is serrated. A black and white photograph is applied onto a piece of paper that fits into the recessed area. The photograph shows a tall fountain with a stag on top, in a park-like setting with trees on the left and buildings in the background and on the right. Below the fountain is the title, "Fountain. Bushnell Park. Hartford, Conn." The back of the photograph has some heavy scratches. The top surface of the paperweight has some light scratches and areas of dirt adhered to the lower right quadrant.

NotesSubject Note: The photograph in the paperweight shows Corning Fountain in Bushnell Park, Hartford, Connecticut. The fountain was erected in 1899 and presented by John Corning (Corning Glass Works of New York) as a tribute to his father, a Hartford businessman who operated a grist mill on the site. The sculpture uses a Native American theme, rather than a classical one, which would have been more typical of the period. The 30-foot-tall monument is made of marble and stone, with the figure of a stag. (Hunt 5/27/2005)Subject Terms
